A message from Jack and Perry
It same seems odd that we're releasing our debut album at our age but there's a very good reason for that...
Back in '64, when we were a couple of young bucks, our mum and dad took us to Torremolinos for the summer.
Dad was a part time magician, and mum his female assistant. They'd secured a summer season at the Pez Espada hotel doing shows for the kids club.
Perry and I watched their first couple of performances but, in truth, watching your parents booed by five year olds gets humiliating after a while. So we decided to find our own entertainment and all of a sudden there were a couple of guys sitting down by the bar singing and playing piano.
We'd sit for hours, hiding behind a screen, listening to them sing and laugh, all fuelled by endless cigarettes and alcohol. Some of the songs we recognised...'New York, New York', 'Amore', 'My Way', 'She taught me how to yodel'......it was magical. Little did we know at the time we were witnessing Frank Sinatra who was in Spain filming Von Ryan's Express. The Police came one night and took Frank away but we thought he sounded pretty good. Plus we finished the six bottles of Bourbon he and his friends left behind. That gave us the taste for the good life, and big hangovers which Perry is still recovering from.
It was listening to Frank in that Torremolinos hotel bar that inspired Perry and I to become crooners as we wanted to be Romford's answer to Frank and Deano so as soon as we got back home we started writing our own songs and rehearsing in the communal bathroom at the end of the hall.
We sent our songs off to all the record companies in London but nobody wanted crooners so we decided to make our album in the new flat we'd moved to in Brompton, above the Taj Mahal restaurant. Half price for Pensioners on Wednesdays, well it was then.
It started off great but then Perry and I fell out over something silly and we never spoke for 53 years. Finally our great grandad banged our heads together and we realised we had something special that we needed to finish, our debut album. We'd already come up with the title 'Dark Side Of The Croon' but in 1973 but we were devastated when another band released an album with a similar title–we tried to sue, unsuccessfully. Thankfully it wasn't a success but it made us realise we needed to finish our masterpiece and so, Perry and I are happy to unleash our debut album, 52 years in the making......
We hope you enjoy it as much as we remember recording most of it.
Lots of Love,
Jack and Perry
